How to Face Paint - Introducing Superstar Face & Body Paints

We realize that for many face painters Superstar is new to them, so we figure we should do a proper introduction to Superstar face and body paints.

Superstar face paints are originally from the Netherlands. For many years Superstar could only be purchased outside of the United States, but finally Superstar has decided to also start selling their brand directly into the USA.

Superstar face paints are incredibly smooth and creamy, making them perfect for soft blending and covering large areas of the skin. Due to their glycerin base, Superstar face paints remain blendable on the skin longer than wax based face paints, which means you can do dry blending technique or work on blending colors directly on the skin for longer periods of time without it drying to fast.

Superstar’s color range is one of the largest in the face painting world and it includes very unique shades that no other face paint manufacturer has, like Petrol Blue, Fuchsia, Watermelon and more. Their pastel colors are great to paint little kids since they are soft feeling when dry and not as pigmented, which makes them easier to wash off. They also have a large range of bold and super pigmented colors that will make your designs stand out, including dark colors like Ink Blue, which are perfect alternatives to black when doing line work.

Although in general glycerin based face paints tend to be less optimal for line work, Superstar has managed to provide us with a formula that allows for crisp lines when using their Superstar Regular darker colors, line black and line white. These last two colors were specially designed for line work, with a slightly different formula than the rest of the colors.

We can’t talk about Superstar without mentioning their Superstar Shimmer colors. Superstar was first to introduce dual pearl colors into the face painting world, including their now famous Ziva Blue Shimmer and Golden Green Shimmer. Superstar Shimmer colors are very soft, they could almost be used without water, but still they can easily be applied with a brush or sponge as they do not tend to clump or become sticky. You just need the right amount of water to activate them.

Superstar Shimmer face painting colors are very unique and they include some with face painting glitter embedded in them, for an extra sparkling effect. If we had to choose what we like most about this brand of face paint, without a doubt is their selection of pearly metallic colors.

All Superstar colors available in the USA are in compliance with the US FDA regulations. You will notice that not all Superstar colors are available in the USA, some are only available outside the USA. That is because different countries have different regulations in regards to pigments approved for cosmetic use, so some colors that are allowed to be used on face paints in Europe and the rest of the world are not allowed in the USA. For your own piece of mind, we only offer Superstar FDA compliant colors at our store.

Superstar face paints are not tested on animals; they do not have gluten, perfume or parabens. Still, because they do contain lanolin (a kind of oil that comes from wool), they are not considered vegan.

How to Activate Superstar Face Paints?

To activate Superstar face and body paints simply add a little bit of water to your sponge or brush, making sure they are wet but not dripping and then rub the brush or sponge against the surface of the face paint cake in a circular motion until you create a light paste almost ink like consistency. Now you can wipe any excess paint on the edge of the container and apply it to the skin. If you are using a sponge patting the sponge against the skin gently might work better than swiping. When using brushes you will want to swipe your brush on the skin. You can reload your brush or sponge as many times as needed.

How to wash off Superstar Face and Body Paints?

Like with any other water activated face paints, the first thing you should do is to lather your face with soap. We recommend using liquid soap and a soft sponge to loosen all of the paint. Only then you should rinse with warm water. If needed you can repeat these steps making sure to always be gentle since harsh friction can irritate your skin.

If after repeating you still notice a faint stain you can apply some lotion or baby oil and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it off. If you still notice some stains after that wait until the next day. Normal skin oil production and friction with the pillow and sheets, as well as skin shedding should take care of it.

Keep in mind that every skin type is different and what stains some people might not stain others and even some areas of your body might stain easier than others. Usually areas with dry skin will tend to stain more than well moisten skin areas.

Are Superstar face and body paints safe?

Superstar face and body paints are made with FDA compliant cosmetic grade ingredients under very strict manufacturing processes to ensure their safety. Still, no one can guarantee a total absence of allergic reactions since each person is different. If you have reasons to believe that someone might be sensitive to any of the ingredients in Superstar face paints, you can always do a patch test on the inside of their elbows, wait 30 minutes and look. If there is no reaction then likely the person will be fine. If a reaction occurred then it is best not to paint them with this brand. This technique can be used with any face paint brand and not just Superstar.

Superstar face paints are perfume, gluten and paraben free to reduce the chances of an allergic reaction. Also, although new to the USA, Superstar has been around for many years now and it has been widely used all over the world by professional artists without problems. Even some big names in the industry paint almost exclusively with Superstar face paints.
